'Let your light shine' (Matthew 5:16)

Our Curriculum

At Thurnham Glasson C of E Primary School,  our children receive a full and enriched curriculum that is tailored to meet their needs. As a staff we have given careful consideration to our children; offering additional experiences and activities which complement their current opportunities and statutory rights.

Ultimately, our curriculum intent is to help us to fulfil our school’s vision of helping all of our children to believe in themselves and to reach their full potential so that they are well prepared for the next step in their education and of course life beyond school.  We inspire our children with exciting cross-curricular topics and interesting, challenging lessons so that they enjoy learning and develop high aspirations for the future.

Through our curriculum we:

  • Embed our Christian values, especially our core value of love.
  • Develop independence and resilience
  • Aim to have a positive impact on the local community and wider environment
  • Utilise the opportunities that outdoor learning offers

Our curriculum is implemented through an engaging cross-curricular themed approach that inspires and excites children about their learning. Our creative curriculum themes are rich in wonder with memorable experiences that allow children's natural creativity and curiosity to flourish, alongside the purposeful acquisition of skills and knowledge.

Staff have worked together to carefully map out the full curriculum and have devised effective tracking systems to make sure there is clear progression for all and that we have high expectations for children’s achievements in all subjects.

Examples of the additional experiences offered to our children include whole-school visits to the theatre, visits to the seaside and cultural visits such as museums and areas of natural beauty.  As outdoor learning is important to us, children in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to go to the Isle of Man for a week of outdoor education in June. Those pupils who choose not to go will enjoy an Activity Week in school.  All classes benefit from visits or visitors (eg authors, sport professionals and members of our church community ) to the school every term, to help us to enrich the curriculum even further and to continue to deepen the children’s learning.

Children leave Thurnham Glasson C of E Primary as happy, caring and confident individuals who know how to keep safe, who do well across all subjects and all have high aspirations for the future.

We are proud of the broad and varied curriculum on offer at Thurnham Glasson C of E Primary School. Should you require any additional information regarding the content of our curriculum, please contact the school office.

Though the whole school approaches the same overall theme, the curriculum is individualised and tailored to the needs, skills and knowledge of each child. This is achieved by including the children in the planning process through reflection, discussion with each other and with staff. This process takes place across the whole of the curriculum involved in each topic, but is in much greater detail in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Each child takes their part in planning their own learning journey in all curriculum areas and especially identifying their next key steps in Reading, Writing and Mathematics so that they know what they have to do next to get better.

Through this process each child has many opportunities to reflect on their learning and develop the aims stated above. At the end of each topic children evaluate their learning to assess the extent to which they have fulfilled their learning aims for that topic.
